Saturday, November 1, is the Feast of  All Saints, which is customarily a holy day of obligation for Catholics. However, since it falls on a Saturday it is not a day of obligation this year.
Sunday, November 2, is the Feast of All Souls and the usual Sunday obligation applies. Regular weekend Mass schedules are in effect this year.

All Souls Indulgence

   The Catholic Church traditionally grants a plenary (total) indulgence on the Feast of All Souls, the Sundays preceding and following the feast, and up to eight days after the feast.
    To obtain a plenary indulgence for a loved one who has died, an individual must devoutly visit a cemetery or church (in person or in spirit), recite the Creed and the Our Father.  In addition, within a reasonable period of time a person must, if possible, celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), receive Communion, and say one Our Father and one Hail Mary for the intentions of the Holy Father.  A "reasonable period of time" may be conditioned by health or age.
    A plenary indulgence applies only to deceased persons who may not have entered fully into the glory of eternal life.
    In the Catholic tradition, indulgences are seen as an expression of the church's conviction that God's mercy and love are shared generously within the Communion of Saints, both living and dead.  According to the  Catechism of the Catholic Church, an indulgence is a remission of the effects of sins whose guilt has already been forgiven; these effects are not a punishment inflicted by God but result from the very nature of sin itself (cf.#1471, 1472).
    In the past, this final process of purification was said to take place in Purgatory, which was thought of as a place, and indulgences were measured  by days or months.  In recent years Catholic teaching has emphasized that Purgatory (like heaven or hell) exists outside of time and space and so is best thought of as a process or experience.
    In his announcement of the Year of Mercy in 2015, Pope Francis explained that an indulgence represents a deepening awareness and appreciation for God’s mercy, love and healing--God's indulgence, the Pope said--which is the result of engaging in certain prayers, devotions or pious works.
